Cité de Carcasonne - Carcasonne, France


The first fortifications were built by the Romans in the third century during the Völkerwanderung and had 30 towers and four gates. In the 12th century the castle was errected. The three elements of it's main gate had to be operated by different people to prevent treason. Another outer wall was built it the following century.
